Pripyat is a city in Ukraine which was founded in 1970 as a home and service area for workers of the nearby Chernobyl power plant. The city had a population of 49,360 at the time of its evacuation on 27 April 1986, the day after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. It is estimated that it will take approximately 20,000 years for radiation levels in the region to become safe for habitation.
Today, the city is deserted and many of the buildings in Pripyat have been vandalised and looted. Roofs leak and rooms are often flooded with rainwater. In many areas nature has reclaimed territory and it is not uncommon to find trees and other plants growing on roofs and inside buildings.
